Tract 118 Audio download at bottom of page ___________________ DID JESUS HAVE LONG HAIR? Was Jesus a Nazarite? We have failed to find in the Bible that Jesus was a Nazarite. The Bible states that he was a Nazarene, which means that he lived in the town of Nazareth. I live in America and I am called an American. We don’t see that Jesus took the Nazarite vows. Had Jesus been a Nazarite, he could not have touched the dead man or the leper (Num. 6:1-6). He could not have drank grape juice at the last supper (Mat. 26:27-29). Could the Nazarite cut his hair? He could cut his hair, but he could not shave his head during the days of his vow. (Num. 6:5). For instance, I have had my hair trimmed many times, but I have never shaved my head. After the days of his vow the Nazarite was commanded by the Lord to shave his head (Num. 6:18). Did Samson have long hair like a woman? Nowhere do we see in the Bible that Samson had long hair. The Lord told him not to shave his head. Samson had seven locks. His power was in his consecration rather than in his hair. When he allowed his head to be shaved, he lost his power with God. He could have drank wine and lost his power just the same (Judges 16:17). I hardly think the Lord would command him to break God’s Word, which says that it is a shame for a man to have long hair (I Cor.11:14). Did Absalom have long hair like a woman? Absalom trimmed his hair regularly. He polled his hair, which means to trim it short. Nowhere does the Bible say that he hung by his hair in a tree. He cut 200 shekels of hair off his head each time he got a hair cut. Suppose he had let his hair grow long as some people say. He was not a very good example. He was a rebel, a drop out, and a nonconformist, who rebelled against his parents, the Bible and the government. Did Jesus have long hair? Jesus knew it was against God’s law for a man to have long hair. The Jews were not to shave their head, which was a sign of sorrow. Jesus was a priest (Heb. 9:11). The priests did not let their hair grow long. They did not shave their head. They trimmed their hair, or polled it regularly. (Ezek. 44:20). Why do people think that Jesus had long hair? The carnal artists of the second and third century, who never saw Jesus nor read the Bible, painted pictures of Jesus and the angels having long hair. It is an unscriptural conception. Jesus nor the angels would not break God’s word (I Cor. 11:14). The angel would not have commanded Samson to break God’s Word. The Bible portrays angels who appeared in the form of men (Gen. 18:2). Had they looked like women, or had wings, how could you entertain them unaware? (Heb. 13:2). Does the Bible have other things to say about men having long hair? "Doth not even nature itself teach you that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" (I Cor. 11:14). The word nature means the regular law and order of God. The same word is used in speaking of homosexuals in Romans 1:26. They changed the natural use into that which is against nature. Long hair is a glory for the woman and a shame for the man, (I Cor. 11). The word shame means unseemly, dishonor, reproach, vile affections, reprobate, disgrace, offensive, lustful, and base. In the Bible it is used in reference to sodomy and homosexuality. I don’t want my son to wear a pony tail, rouge, lipstick, or ladies underwear. I don’t want him to wear high heeled shoes, beads or other unisex symbols. I want a real he-man for my son and not another daughter. Charles O. Julian
